Frontline Psychology

Emergency Services

People from many walks of life can be exposed to potentially traumatic incidents but for Emergency Service personnel or first responders this occurs at almost a daily rate. For Police Officers, Firefighters, Ambulance Officers and Paramedics these traumatic experiences often involve confronting threats to life, and witnessing or experiencing serious injury or death.

MPS has a rich history and expertise in working with Police since 2001, with some members of our team benefitting from working internal to Forces, including WA Police Force and Australian Federal Police. This in-depth knowledge and first-hand exposure to policing affords our staff an exceptional awareness of the challenges police officers face and the psychological consequences associated with the law enforcement work.

Our expertise in treating occupational issues for Police Officers later broadened to include work with Firefighters. Beginning in 2016 MPS secured a bespoke contract with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to provide multifaceted interventions for referred firefighters presenting with complex issues. Following this, our contract expanded to include counselling and training services state wide to all DFES firefighters, staff, volunteers and families.

To complete our therapeutic service repertoire of all three WA Emergency service organisations, we began offering counselling and treatment services to St John Ambulance Paramedics, Ambulance Officers, staff, volunteers and family members state wide through inclusion in a preferred provider panel in 2016.

On a daily basis MPS psychologists treat emergency service workers in our three practice sites, as well as also offering family support sessions, group therapy and training sessions to Emergency Service and law enforcement personnel regularly. We work with wellbeing staff internal to the three organisations, utilise literature from leading frontline researchers such as Phoenix Australia and are members of Emergency Service and Law Enforcement professional networks and interest groups. We have tailored our information, research, therapy and training programs specifically to assist first responders and law enforcement officers and welcome you to follow our dedicated twitter page @MPS_Psychology or contact our lead frontline Psychology Consultant Angela or call our receptionist Megan on 9433 6559 to learn about our state-wide, in person and remote services to WAPF, DFES and SJA members.
